Diplomatic interiors operate under a register of permanence that most residential commissions do not approach. The client’s brief for this principal reception room was precise: a mantelpiece commanding the room’s primary axis, fabricated from a single coherent stone narrative, book-matched across the breast and pilasters, with zero visible jointing at any angle of view from the room’s seating arrangement.
The compound challenge was threefold. First, the slab allocation required quarry-level selection — veining continuity across a panel set of this scale cannot be achieved from standard warehouse stock. Second, the profile work demanded by the brief included a raised bolection moulding, a classical overmantel shelf with a bullnose return, and a recessed hearth plinth — each requiring hand-finishing to tolerances of under one millimetre. Third, the diplomatic setting introduced scheduling constraints: installation access was restricted to a forty-hour window, requiring complete dry-fit verification prior to site entry.
Approach
Granite Ghana’s project office initiated specification at the quarry level, securing a matched slab run from a premium dark absolute granite vein with visible crystalline character consistent with the residence’s existing stone elements. The book-match geometry was calculated digitally before any cutting commenced, ensuring the mirrored vein pattern would resolve precisely at the mantelpiece centreline.
Fabrication was conducted at the Tema project workshop. The bolection moulding profile was hand-routed in three passes, with each section dry-assembled on a full-scale template before polishing. Edge profiles were finished to a high specification: ogee returns on the pilasters, a flat-polished bullnose on the overmantel shelf, and a honed hearth slab to reduce reflective glare at the room’s natural light levels.
The integrated marble surround — a pale cream Carrara-register marble inset — was fabricated as a separate sub-assembly, fitted to the granite breast with hairline mortar joints sealed under diplomatic-grade colour-matched grout.
Installation was completed within the allocated access window. The installation team worked to a pre-agreed sequence sheet, with each panel piece numbered and sequenced from the workshop. No site cutting was required.
